6.4 Magnitude earthquake struck taiwan, hotel collapses

An earthquake having a magnitude of 6.4 in the richter scale struck the east coast of Taiwan at 23:50PM(1550GMT) resulting a massive destruction and collapsing of a hotel.Its epicentre was 21km northeast of the port city Hualien.Media agencies reported that several other hotels were seen toppled and people are trapped inside.A local TV broadcasted Marshan Hotel in Hualien slanting on its side and partly crumpled into the ground.Media reports also suspected 30 people being trapped inside the hotel premises.

The fire agency reported that at least 4 buildings including another hotel has been damaged severely with local news showing the roads and highways got cracks.


Hualien is a port city and most popular tourist destination as it lies on the picturesque island nearer to Taroko Gorge.The President of Taiwan Tsai Ing-wen said the rescue team and police from around the island were ready to help.The disaster management team also rushed to the spot immediately after the incident.Officials of the rescue team said that 28 people have been rescued from the hotel and a resident.The social media within no time erupted out to show their love,support and prayers with the people of Taiwan from around the world.

Taiwan lies on the junction of two tectonic plates and is prone to earthquakes.The worst tremor of the island in recent decade was a 7.6 magnitude quake in September 1999 killing around 2400 people.
