Supposed to bring a major change in the way of using Social Media apps like Facebook and WhatsApp by promoting and spreading of unauthorized and fake information, a directive has issued by the Varanasi District Administration warning of strict prosecution under the IT Act. According to this directive, it has been strictly stated that only a person should become admin of a group on Facebook and WhatsApp when he is capable of taking the responsibilities of things being forwarded in his group. This action has been taken against those admins of social media groups, who were forwarding information in groups without even authenticating them, causing social disturbance and instigating large groups of people against one another and especially during election time. The order stated that any group found spreading the rumors without authenticating those, the admin of the group will be charged with the IPC, IT Act, and relevant sections under Cyber Crime. Forwarding of such rumors and hoax could be also charged legally, leading to legal actions to be taken against the admin of such groups. It has also been clarified in the order that any past directives issued by the Supreme Court and High Court will also be followed in conjunction with this directive released by the Varanasi District Administration.
