Finance Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Haseeb Drabu was stacked by Mehbooba Mufti, the chief Minister of the state for his controversial comment "Kashmir is not a political issue" and the province is not a "conflict state". Speaking at the event in Delhi organized by a Ph.D. chamber of Commerce and Industry, Drabu who is an economist and has vast experience in financial domain said, “J&K is not at all a conflict state nor is it a political issue. It ought to be looked as a society-related issue from communities not only from within but also worldwide”. The Finance Minister further added, “The need of the hour was to rebuild the economy of J&K more through participated efforts of civil society and institution of excellence as Kashmir shouldn’t be looked at (from)the twin angles of conflict and political spectrum”
The state government led by chief minister Mehbooba Mufti's Peoples Democratic Party had written to Drabu seeking an explanation for his remark but he didn’t to reply.
According to sources, some of the decisions Drabu took as Finance Minister made him unpopular in the government. Drabu has also been chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Bank long before he was given a seat in the state council of ministers. As J&K finance minister he was a member of the all-powerful Goods and Services Tax or GST Council.
