India continues to remain world’s largest arm importer

India continues to remain the world’s largest weapons importer over the last five years and arms exports from the United States, accounting for 12% of the global imports form 2013-2017.According to the data on international arms transfer released by global think-tank Stockholm, Arms imports by India increased by 24% between 2008-2012 and 2013-2017 periods

The list also contains names of Saudi Arabia, Iraq, UAE, China, Australia, Algeria, Pakistan and Indonesia as world’s top arms importer followed by India. The largest arms supplier to India are Russia,  accounted for 62% India’s arms imports in 2013–17, followed by the US (15%) and Israel (11%).

India’s overall imports raised to 24% in the five-year period, accounting for nearly 12% of all global imports. As per the reports of Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI India has been the largest weapons importer for over a decade despite the thrust since 2014 under the Make in India mission to build indigenously.

India continues to be the biggest buyer of weaponry from Russia and Israel. Washington has been supplying fewer weapons to Islamabad, the report revealed. Imports of Pakistan were dropped by 76% from the US between 2013-17 and 2008-12, but it was the main recipient of Chinese weapons between 2013-17.

Commenting on the reports military affairs expert Air Vice Marshal Kapil Kak (retd) said: “While there is an awareness that India needs to indigenize on fast-track, our perpetual problem has been a lack of the strategic culture of defence industry build up. Only if we move proactively, can we crack the code.”
