Nawaz Sharif former Prime Minister of Pakistan has been sentenced for 10 years in jail and his daughter Maryam Sharif for 10 years for corruption. An accountable court in Pakistan has passed the judgement in one of the four cases of corruption against Nawaz Sharif which was related to the ownership of four flats in the Avenfield House in London.
Defence lawyer Mohammad Aurangzeb told news agency AFP that "(Nawaz Sharif) has been awarded 10 years imprisonment" over the purchase of high-end properties in London.
The judgement came just three weeks before the general elections in Pakistan on July 25.
Nawaz Sharif wanted to delay the judgement by a week but the court has dismissed the request on July 6. Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Sharif are in London, UK as last year Nawaz’s wife Kulsoom Nawaz have been diagnosed with throat cancer. Since then they have made several trips to Pakistan from London in order to attend the hearing and his wife.
A part from the sentence, Nawaz Sharif and Maryam were also fined by the court which is 10 million dollars to Nawaz Sharif and his daughter has been fined to pay 2.6 million dollar.
Nawaz Sharif have also resigned from his post last year when Supreme Court disqualified him from holding the public office. He was a three-time prime minister of Pakistan. The Avenfield case was one of the four cases filed against him and his children by the NAB (National Accountability Bureau) on Supreme Court’s order in the Panama Paper case which disqualified Nawaz Sharif.
The judgement was handed down by NAB after a series of delays. His son-in-law Safdar Awan received one year sentence and his daughter for years. His daughter have received the sentence for supporting the crime while his son-in-law for not cooperating in case so have got one year sentence.
