150 Kids Admitted to Hospital In Kolkata, Officials report Influenza like Symptoms

The paediatric ward of Jalpaiguri district hospital has been admitting 40-50 children everyday, for the past four days, a health official said on Sunday. Out of all the kids admitted, 90 percent were tested for Covid and only one was found positive for the virus.

The child is admitted to a special newborn care unit and is in isolation. The remainder, aged between one and four, are said to have Influenza-like illness with symptoms of fever, shortness of breath and cough.

A senior health official informed that Dengue and Malaria screening was done and 45 new beds were added to better accommodate the children. “To deal with the situation in a better way, a new ward was opened in the hospital on Friday. The administration made regular visits to identify if a new outbreak had occurred.” He further added that the cases were not complicated and a high discharge rate was observed. “48 patients were discharged today. The pediatricians are monitoring the cases. So far, the cases appear to be a seasonal outbreak of Influenza-like illness.”

West Bengal recorded 751 new cases of the Coronavirus infection on Sunday. The total case tally for the state rose to 15,56,908 after the addition of the new numbers. The Covid death toll reached 18,577 after 10 more patients succumbed to the virus. The active cases saw a drop by 16, to 8,187.

757 patients recovered from the virus on Sunday, taking the recovery rate for the state to 98.28 percent. The vaccination drive in the state has successfully administered 4,70,73,973 doses, including 5,68,364 on Sunday itself.
