7 Problematic Things Bollywood Needs To Stop Romanticising Immediately

Okay, I’ll be honest here. For a long long time, everything that I knew about love, romance and chivalry was from Bollywood movies. Everything from how it must feel when you’re in love, to what you should say, how you must react was all inspired by my favourite actors and actresses on screen.

And while I was kind of grateful to Bollywood films for turning me into this hopeless romantic, I realised much later on in my life, how, along the way, it also taught me a few things I wish I’d be able to unlearn.

You see, in a bid to create impactful, dramatic and larger than life films, Bollywood would often end up romanticising way more than the feeling of love.

It would implicitly promote a number of problematic things that managed to stick with the audiences and create a culture of toxicity.

Which is why, Bollywood needs to immediately stop romanticizing these things:

1. Teacher-Student Love Stories

The thing about movies is, they stick. Especially in the minds of young and impressionable people, for whom watching movies where Shah Rukh Khan is trying to propose to his teacher in the middle of a classroom is something to take inspiration from.

This is how suddenly a minor may start developing feelings for his teacher and god knows that isn’t just problematic but also might land both - the kid and the teacher in a lot of trouble.

2. Not Taking 'No' For An Answer. Ever

When W. E Hickson said, ‘try try till you succeed’, he certainly didn’t mean for anyone to pester or strong-arm someone into saying ‘yes’. But I guess, our society and well, Bollywood chose to make their own interpretation out of it for there is no movie where the hero doesn’t move mountains pursuing the girl.

Bollywood really needs to stop romanticising the chase because if anything, it is making it harder for people to understand that a ‘no’ means ‘no’.

3. Pursuing Someone Already In A Relationship

The problem with this is, that it makes people believe it is okay to hit on men or women while they’re still with someone else. It’s not just wrong on a moral and an ethical level, but it also disrespects boundaries.

And no matter how cruel or mismatched the existing partner of the protagonist may be, promoting going after someone’s girl or a guy is simply not cool.

4. Cheating

The final nail in the coffin for any relationship, that has somehow turned into a breeding ground for new relationships, thanks to Bollywood.

Because every time a movie is made about how two people cheated on their partners, cried for a song and then got their happily ever after, it undermines the very foundation of relationships, which is trust.

And not to forget, it gets the message across that somehow, it is okay to cheat on your partners and justify it with a few tears. Well, guess what? It’s not.

5. Resolving Conflict With An Unannounced Kiss

No matter how romantic and intense it may seem on the screen, when in reality, someone were to kiss you mid-sentence or mid-argument, trust me your impulse wouldn’t be to kiss back. Because not only is it not the time, the place or the moment but also there is no consent.

You can’t resolve fights by sneaking in a kiss or forcing a make-out. You resolve fights by communicating, accepting mistakes and making amends. Something that Bollywood should actually show, instead of random kisses.

6. First Time Sex Is Fantastic

Alright, here is the truth - it’s not. Not for the girl, not for the boy, not for anyone. What it is, is sloppy, awkward, painful and very unsettling. At least for the first few minutes.

Which is why, when Bollywood insinuates how first sex is nothing short of a euphoric release, it sets the wrong standards to measure your own sex life by.

7. Using Violence And Abuse To Show Love

Movies like Kabir Singh have taken quite the credit for propagating such toxicity in relationships wherein either of the partner thinks it is okay to abuse or belittle the other for according to them, they were doing it out of love.

Let me tell you something, the only thing that is justified doing out of love is actually love. Anything other than that stems from another emotion and if your instinct is to hit your loved one, clearly, you need a psychiatrist and not a Bollywood movie out of it.
