BRICS Summit 2021: Covid-19 Pandemic, Security and Afghanistan

The BRICS Summit is scheduled to take place on September 9, 2021. This year’s theme for the summit is ‘Cooperation for Continuity, Consolidation, and Consensus’ but the conversations are likely to be dominated by the Covid-19 pandemic, security concerns, and Afghanistan.

For the second year in a row, Thursday’s annual gathering of the world’s emerging economies will be held virtually due to the pandemic. The summit will be chaired by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro is slated to attend, along with President Xi Jinping of China, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The attendance of Xi is of significance since he is very selective about the events he attends.
