India reported 34,973 new infections and 260 deaths due to Covid-19 over the last 24 hours. Kerala reported the highest number of cases, 26,200, followed by Maharashtra where 4,912 cases were reported yesterday.
Maharashtra is set to witness a second consecutive muted celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi with the BMC, implying strict guidelines, barring the devotees from in-person pandal visits, to curb the spread of Covid-19, as the state reports the second-highest number of active cases after Kerala. The city police have banned gatherings of more than four people and processions between September 10 and September 19.
According to a US study, Covid vaccines are highly effective in preventing hospitalization, or emergency visits of the patients who tested positive for the virus. According to the government data, the first dose of the vaccine is 96.6 percent effective in preventing death whereas the second dose is 97.5 percent effective, reaffirming that the vaccines offer near-total protection against serious disease and death.
The cumulative Covid vaccine doses administered in India crossed 72 crores on Thursday.
