Junk Food habits are worse than Drugs, hard to overcome, reveals a study

If you are thinking of giving up on delicious Junk food like pastries, burger and Pizza and it is definitely not going to be easy at all, as you will suffer from same kind of withdrawal symptoms like drug addict, says a study. According to a study by the University of Michigan (U-M) reduction in highly processed food leads to sadness, irritation, tiredness and cravings.
The effect remains for the first 5 to 6 days after the withdrawal, says the reports. Only after a week or so the effect reduces, which is also parallel to the time of drug withdrawal symptoms. It is not easy to give up on your carvings and the withdrawal symptoms might show it effect by urging you to return back to the old unhealthy eating habits, asserted Ashley Gearhardt, assistant professor at the U-M.
The study in the Appertite Journal was done on 231 adults who reported how they felt and how it affected them after reducing the highly processed food they relished till last year.
Previous studies have focused on sugar withdrawal among animals, or the literature regarding humans offered only anecdotal evidence, said Erica Schulte, doctoral student at the U-M.
What all researchers can agree upon is that the addictive qualities of tobacco, drugs or alcohol affect the brain similarly and cutting back can lead to negative side effects. Anxiety, headaches, irritability and depression are some of those outcomes. Understanding whether withdrawal may also occur with highly processed foods was an essential next step in evaluating the validity of food addiction, Schulte said.
