PM Modi to visit US later this month to meet President Biden

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit the United States to meet President Biden in the last week of September. This will be his first visit to the States since Biden assumed office in January 2021.

The PM is expected to visit New York and Washington DC between September 22-September 27. This will also be the first in-person meeting between the two leaders, who have met before virtually, on three different occasions.

PM Modi was supposed to visit the UK last year for the G-7 summit but couldn’t because of the second wave of Covid-19 in India. His last visit to the States was in September 2019, prior to the pandemic, where President Trump hosted him at the Howdy Modi event.

Modi’s meeting with Biden will also be an effort to reach out to the democrats since his ‘abki baar Trump sarkaar’ line didn’t sit well with them. The establishment is also vocal about the human rights situation in Jammu and Kashmir.

The meeting between the two leaders comes at a crucial time as the government formation of Taliban is underway in Afghanistan. The PM is expected to meet top officials in the  Biden administration and discuss the shared concern i.e. China.

The two leaders are also said to be working on an ambitious agenda on the Indo-Pacific; and an in-person Quad leader’s summit is being planned in Washington for the same.

In an attempt to lay the foundation for PM Modi’s agenda, Harsh Vardhan Shringla, the foreign secretary, has met the top officials in Washington DC. He is said to have discussed strategic bilateral ties and regional and global issues with them.
