On Thursday, PM Marendra Modi took a jibe at Congress on the victory of NDA for the Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairperson election. Mr. Modi said, “This time, both sides in this election had a 'hari' (Harivansh Narayan and BK Hariprasad) but one had a BK, koi nahi bike.”
Since the retirement of Mr. PJ Kurien on July 1, the post of Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman was lying vacant.
Mr. Harivansh Narayan Singh JDU member was elected as the Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairperson over opposition’s BK Haiprasad. Mr M Venkaiah Naidu Rajya Sabha Chairman was called for the division of votes in the House as the voice vote remained indecisive.
Harivansh Narayan Singh was the winner with 125 votes and BK Hariprasad got 105 votes in his favour.
Prime Minister Modi congratulate Harivansh Narayan Singh on the win after the announcement and said, “I congratulate Harivansh ji on behalf of the whole house. He has been blessed with the talent of writing. He was also a favourite of former PM Chandra Shekhar ji.”
Opposition Leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, Rajya Sabha also congratulated Mr. Singh and said that as a Deputy Chairperson he will not be partial towards the NDA government and will pay attention to the objections raised by the Opposition.
